Military-Grade Secure Communication

Koot delivers end-to-end encrypted peer-to-peer messaging, voice & video calls, and file sharing — with no servers storing your messages, ever.

🔒
End-to-End Encrypted

All messages and files are encrypted using industry-standard protocols. Only you and your contact can read them.

📡
Peer-to-Peer Architecture

Conversations happen directly between devices. No message storage on servers — data never leaves your control.

📱
Works Everywhere

No app to install. Works on any device with a browser — phone, tablet, or desktop.

📁
Secure File Sharing

Share images, videos, documents and more — transferred directly peer-to-peer, encrypted in transit.

🎙️
Voice & Video Calls

Crystal-clear encrypted calls using WebRTC — routed peer-to-peer whenever possible.

👥
Group Rooms

Create encrypted group chats and multi-party calls with your team or colleagues.

🤖
Private AI Assistant

Chat with an AI that runs entirely on your own machine. Your conversations never leave your network.

There are two ways to use AI in Koot. Pick whichever fits — you can switch any time.
A
Connect your own AI provider — the “AI” button, top of your contacts list

Paste a key from Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Nothing to install, works on a phone, ready in about a minute. Free tiers are available from several of these providers.

What it can actually do for you:

✅
Create and track work

“Create a task to fix the loading dock by Friday, assign it to Umak.” It also reads back real status — what’s overdue, blocked, or stalled — computed from your actual tasks, not guessed.

📄
Write real documents

Ask for a report, a checklist, a slide deck or a spreadsheet and it lands in Koot Documents, formatted and editable — not as a wall of chat text.

👥
Works inside a group

Type @ai in any group. It sees the recent conversation, and anything it creates is shared with that group automatically. You approve each action before it happens.

🖼️
Reads photos you share

Send a picture of a damaged part, a delivery note or a whiteboard and ask about it directly.

🔑
Your key, your account

Requests go straight from your browser to the provider you chose. Koot’s servers never see your key or your conversation. You can share your AI with a contact, or turn it off, whenever you like.

Worth knowing: your chosen provider does see what you send it. If that matters for a particular conversation, use option B below instead.

B · Run AI entirely on your own machine — using Ollama, a free local AI runtime. Slower to set up and needs a PC, but your questions and answers never leave your own network. Best where nothing may go to the cloud at all.
1
Install Ollama

Download and install Ollama for Windows / Mac / Linux from the official site:

https://ollama.com/download

Run the installer — it adds Ollama as a background service automatically.

2
Pull an AI model

Open a terminal (Command Prompt / PowerShell / Terminal) and run:

ollama pull phi3.5

Recommended models by machine size:

phi3.5 — 2.2 GB, fast, good for 4–8 GB RAM
qwen2.5:1.5b — 1.1 GB, very fast, minimal RAM
qwen2.5:7b — 4.7 GB, smarter, needs 8+ GB RAM
llama3.1:8b — 4.7 GB, general purpose

3
Start Ollama server

In a terminal, run:

ollama serve

Ollama listens on localhost:11434. Leave this terminal open.

4
Get the Koot AI Bridge

The bridge connects Ollama to kooot.in. You need Node.js 18+ installed, then:

# Clone or download koot-ai/bridge.js
npm install socket.io-client node-fetch

Edit config.json — set your botPermanentId and botSecret.

5
Start the bridge

In a new terminal window:

node bridge.js

You should see: ✅ Koot AI connected as koot-ai-auto

6
Use AI in Koot

In any personal chat with Koot AI, type:

/model — see available models
/model phi3.5 — switch to a model
/clear — reset conversation
/offline — shut down AI
/help — show all commands

In a group chat, mention AI with:

@AI what's the plan for today?

Everyone in the group sees the AI's reply.

How it works

Your browser
→
kooot.in server
→
bridge.js
↓
Ollama (localhost)
→
AI model

The AI model runs on your machine. Only the question travels to your bridge — never to any third-party AI service.

GPU tip: If you have an NVIDIA GPU, set CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES=0 in your environment before starting Ollama. This makes inference ~10× faster than CPU-only.
Koot Documents is a document, spreadsheet, presentation and notes workspace built into Koot — with the same rule as the rest of it: your files live on your devices, not on a server.
1
What you can make

Four kinds of file, all editable in the browser with no install:

📄
Documents

Formatted text — reports, procedures, handovers. Downloads as a real Word .docx.

📊
Spreadsheets

A full grid editor with formulas. Downloads as a real Excel .xlsx.

📽️
Presentations

Slide decks you can edit slide by slide.

🗒️
Notes

Quick plain-text jottings — a list, a reminder, meeting notes.

Koot AI can create any of these for you — see the Koot AI tab.

2
Where your files actually live

Every document is stored in your own browser on your own device. There is no copy sitting on a Koot server — which is the point, but it has one important consequence:

⚠️ Clearing your browser's site data deletes your documents permanently. Nobody can restore them for you. Use Settings → Backup & Restore to keep an encrypted copy somewhere safe.

You can also download any file to your computer at any time from the editor's Download button.

3
How sharing works

Open a document and press Share, then pick the contacts who should have it. From then on, your edits travel directly to their devices, encrypted — the same peer-to-peer path your messages use.

Ask Koot AI for a document inside a group and everyone in that group gets it automatically, no sharing step needed.

Everyone shared on a file can edit it. The most recent save wins, so for now it's best if two people don't rewrite the same section at the same moment — like a shared drive, not a live co-editing canvas.

4
What happens when someone's offline

Nothing is lost. If a person you shared with isn't online, the change waits and delivers itself the moment you're both reachable again — so a document can take a little while to appear on a colleague's device, especially the first time.

If a file hasn't arrived yet, it simply isn't on that device yet — give it a moment and reopen it rather than recreating it.

Tip: Documents opens in its own tab. Keep Koot open in the other tab — that's the connection your files sync over.
